Ted Kulongoski from All Things Considered

1. What did the interviewer know about the subject before the interviewer?

- The interview revolved around the governor's love for fishing and his attempts to create more "green" jobs for Oregon now and in the future. She knew what kind of fish he liked to catch, where he often fished etc. She had read his biography and was knowledgeable about his previous accomplishments.

2. What kind of questions were asked?

- A lot of the times not questions were asked, it was more of a narration. The interviewer would narrate the situation/interview and the Governor's speaking clips reflected what was being narrated.

3. How did they build up to questions? How did they follow up to questions?

- The interviewer was very good at using follow up questions after the governor would comment on fishing, or about the green jobs he was developing. Those were the only real questions that you heard the interviewer ask. Because the interview took place in a very relaxed environment it seemed as if the interviewer and the governor were old friends simply having a conversation.

4. Did the interviewer seem to have a strategy?

- Yes she did. She seemed very relaxed and genuinely wanted to hear the governors fishing tips and stories about being on the river. She introduced the interview saying she was going to talk to the governor about his two passions: fly fishing and creating green jobs. She did exactly that.

5. How was the apparent relationship between the interviewer and the interviewee?

- The relationship was very relaxed and open. The topic was not very controversial and neither seemed offended by any questions or answers.

6. What did you learn about interviewing from this interview?

 - How much smoother an interview goes when you don't stick exactly to your list of questions, but rather go with the flow and form questions based on your interviewee's answers. It makes for a far more interesting interview and I think this way you get more information out of the person you are interviewing. Also, it may sometimes be smarter to conduct an interview at a place where your interviewee feels at home and is comfortable.
<div it was first announced that we were going to cover the event I was surprised, "Whoa, whoa whoa, this is not on the syllabus!" But then I quickly realized this is very good practice, as it is a similar situation to what "working" journalists do. When I walked into the convention room I was a little nervous because I was not quite sure what to expect, I didn't have a lot of information and it was a challenge to create more dynamic questions. During Torrico's speech he provided a lot of good quotes. It was the same during the rally. I realized it was important to take everything in and worry about getting technical information later. I was able to do some research when I got home. Over all I'm glad that we were kind of thrown into an unknown situation and forced to make the best out of it.
AB 656

Alberto Torrico, Assembly Majority Leader, visited San Jose State University this morning to promote his new bill which is designed to help CSUs' regain much needed funds.

A crowd of students gathered during the two hour rally and chanted, "We have the fix, it's 656!" Torrico's bill, also called AB 656, will require an oil and gas severance tax of 9.9% that would go into effect on January 1, 2010, if it passes. California is the only state where oil is taken without a tax, compared to the oil-rich Alaska where oil extractors are charged a 25% tax.

The majority leader is purposely targeting the students on CSU campuses to gain support for his bill, "The way we are going to turn this state around is going to be led by young people." Torrico is hoping to gain 100,000 in support of AB 656 to prove its significance to the governor.

California's institutes of higher education are in desperate need of this potential funding. The budget cuts have caused - student fee increases, fewer courses, campus wide and faculty furlough days and the loss of faculty members.

Liz Kara, president of the San Jose Faculty System, spoke passionately and commented on how severe the situation has become, "The CSU system is on the verge of slipping away, this is a bleak time. Close the chancellor's office before you close admissions!"

Although the majority of people on campus are in support of the bill, they do have one concern about its potentially negative repercussions. What would possibly happen to gas prices? AB 656 contains provisions that will restrict oil and gas extractors from charging their consumes higher prices to make up for the tax.

Fly on the Wall

Rain or shine, one of the most eclectic crowds in San Francisco can be found at the Alemany Flea Market. The people drawn to the event are just as interesting and quirky as the items being sold. In the early morning hours the sellers stand tucked away behind their products ready to make a bargain. As the sun warms the scene, they begin chatting to their neighbors, filling them in on the latest flea market gossip. The vendors all seem to know each other to some degree, as the day wears on you realize this is there Sunday hang-out. Couples hold hands and stand close as they peruse the aisles. They carefully look through the one-of-a-kind art work, hoping to find a gem to furnish their tiny San Francisco apartment with. The hipster types, adorned with their high-waisted shorts, gladiator sandals and oversized bags browse the many racks of clothes. They anxiously look for fashions from decades ago. Kids are zipping around, shuffling through the endless amounts of books, toys and DVDs. The smell of Mexican and Salvadorian food wafts through the venue. The fresh, greasy food is enticing and is the "breakfast of champions" on a Sunday morning. To both kids and adults, the flea market is an enormous treasure chest, filled mostly with things they don't need but must buy.
Comparing Media

I chose to use the reports on Michael Jackson's death to show the differences in print, online and television media. It was an event that stunned the world and has continued to resonate through all forms of media to this day.
Online: There are thousands of stories on the internet about the pop star's death. I actually chose two stories to take a closer look at. The first story comes from the L.A Times website, "L.A Now". The story was literally before Jackson was pronounced officially dead. This article is a testament as to why newspapers must now report online. If they only relied on print, people would have been twittering about this for hours before the story would have been printed. The story did not have any direct quotes, but rather, reports from law officials. The second story I decided on was one produced by CNN. This story had direct quotes from Marlon Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley. It also went a little more in depth about the singers past and provided the reader with links to additional information on Michael Jackson. I think both stories are most similar to broadcast journalism in terms of timeliness and depth of data.

Television: I watched a live, continuous coverage report done by MSNBC. Most of the video taken was of the massive crowd that gathered outside of the UCLA hospital. The anchors discussed everything from Jackson's debt, to his infamous child molestation case and his attempt to make a music comeback in the near future. What they did not really touch on was how or why he had died. It was breaking news and they did not have that exact information yet, but they did need to report immediately on his death. I think broadcast journalism is still very important because it gives the viewer a human connection. Someone that they can trust to report the truth, tragedy etc.

Newspaper: It was harder to find an article archived on the internet. But I did manage to find one from the Chronicle. It was a lot longer than either of the articles previously used, but had a lot more information packed in. It was also written a day later. There were quotes from Jackson's siblings and quotes from Jackson, (obviously before his death). The pictures were of The Jackson Five and various pictures of Jackson throughout the years.

<img width='1' height='1' that I realized how beautiful writing could be. My teacher presented poems and sonnets to us written by: E.E Cummings, Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare and many more famous authors. Many of these I loved and there were others that I did not care for. The poems that really struck me were those that were like a puzzle. These writers produced pieces where every word enhanced the next. The lines were constructed immaculately, and the words were chosen perfectly. If they were writing about love, it is so touching and meaningful. If the topic was tragedy, it always felt so dramatic and epic. An author I took a liking to immediately was Edgar Allan Poe. I was a little girl when I read my first Edgar Allan Poe story, "The Tell Tale Heart." Even though I was a child his style was obvious and I loved it. He seems so out there and peculiar, much of his writing takes on an eerie but beautiful tone. Below is a quote that I love from his poem, "The Raven." I also included "Annabel Lee," one of Poe's very last poems which was published after his death in 1849.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:
